TM A team
(aka Olav's Flying Circus)
Andy Davis The lead rider. Andy has been riding with Team Midland from the beginning and is a real powerhouse. With his twin brother Steve these two will form the experienced core of the A Team. Andy has ridden in road races and Time trials and represented his club in the National Ten Mile championship a few years back. With Steve and Andy driving and guiding, the TM A Team will pile on the laps. Both Steve and Andy could be relied upon to post sub 22minute times for ten mile - once upon a time. [The second rider in the picture is Colin Trippas. These two shed Darth Hewson on the previous lap during the scratch race in Newport].
Olav Martin-Giles Olav came to cycling via Triathlon. He is known as the Team Midland Mr Fix it. (Ed: or some other similar phrase that starts with 'F'). According to his CV Olav is a talented engineer. His current project is building the track frame he will be riding during the Children In need 24hr event. Olav has trained on the Calshot, Newport and Manchester tracks this year. Under the guidance of Andy Davis this team will fly. This photo was taken during the Team Midland Last Chance Ten. This event was run on what we considered to be a slow course until Richard Bradley set the course record at 19.44. Olav produced a ride of 23.51 to finish 19th.
Steve Davis To say that Steve is the mirror of Andy in every way is an understatement. Being identical twins these guys played the old one-two in road races to perfection. Steve and Andy were within seconds of each other over all distances. Coming from a highly talented bike riding family, dad Colin was a successful road man as was Uncle Reg Price. Cycling talent is in the genes. How do you tell them apart? As dad Colin once told Graham, Andy is on the yellow Bike and Steve is on the white.
Duncan McNutt The TM Dentist. Duncan is another 23 minute ten mile man, Track rider, Cyclo cross racer and all-round jolly good egg.
Arthur Kelly Seen here in Coventry colours riding high on the Newport banking. Another 23 minute ten mile man. Bags of power and a real TM character [Ed: even though the Brummies can't understand a word he says]. Started riding a bike competitively only in 2001 with the Leamington and after a huge learning curve, and a few learning crashes, achieved long 22 for tens and nearly broke the hour for twenty five in 2002. Fortunate to win some club silver that year too, but work, family and other responsibilities got in the way of effective training. Joining TM as life began to settle to the point that he was able to train consistently that shows in the perfomances this year on the K26 courses.
Andy Waters-Peach Peachy's a recent convert to TMR having previously been in the Royal Sutton. Usually competes with Cee on the back of the tandem so how he'll cope on his own is one of life's unknowns. A very strong rider, he'll keep the engine of the A Team thumping along.

Team 2

The Weston Fly Boys
Craig Weston The man with the plan for this event. Craig is a pensions expert. Also a talented Mountain bike rider and on the track he is no slouch. During the Team Midland Training day at Calshot in April he recorded 20.97 for two laps of the track. As the leader of Team 2 they will push the TM A team hard and produce similar distance. Craig has worked constantly to make this event a success and we may even give him complementary TM status. [Ed: Craig, just beware of their initiation ceremony involving a goat and a Kylie calendar.] As mentioned, Craig is an Independent Pensions Adviser so if you are planning early retirement then talk to Craig.
Jonathan Snelgrove A commited Road and Mountain Biker at 6’ 4" he packs a mean punch of speed over any distance and ideally suited to the track.
Mike Jarmey Also known as Jarmstrong for the same reason as the great Man himself as Mike never gives up and will be their until the bitter end.
Dave Bridle Memeber of the Tuff Fitty triathlon club. From time trialling and track in the 70’s to family and 20+ years wanting to race again. 15 years running to Triathlon and the motivation and need to get back to time trialling and the thrill of the track. The “Hills” are a steeper than I remember from Herne Hill but the thrill is just the same. For experience just read age, has posted an 11 sec lap of Calshot.
Lido Badawy

Team 3

DHC + Redkite
Paul Stewart The big Man from Southampton will guide the West Midland team Red kite Cycles round his home track at Calshot. Paul joined us at Calshot, Newport and Manchester on our MS Fundraising Tour of The Tracks. His 250 metre times are Calshot (20.05), Newport (16.55), Manchester (16.22 ). Very fast over 250 metres, with the Red kite guys working with, him the miles will fly.
Pete Varian Originally with Team Midland Pete joined Red Kite to ride road races and Cyclo-cross events. Pete also is a regular rider at Halesowen Track through the summer months. Pete has a long record of sub-23 minute tens but is very capable of maintaining the effort over longer distances. So an hour's effort will be no problem for Pete.
Ross Adams Another son of a cycling heritage. Ross is studying at Southampton Uni and is a Calshot regular so he will feel at home on the Calshot Boards. A high performing road rider the Red Kite DHC team could set the standard for others to follow.
Rob Ellis Team: Agiskoviner.com (Agisko, Viner, For Goodness Shakes, BottleSport). Currently training for next year with main efforts going towards track & TT after having a year plagued with a knee injury. With regular sessions at Newport Velo & more lined up at Calshot I’m hoping 2009 will make up for my disastrous season. Finished 6th overall in the Rudy Project TT series 2007, 16th in the Duo Normand 2007, & not forgetting being teammate to Darren Kenny in Germany 1986.

Simon Richardson see below...

Team 4

TM G-men
Graham Hewson Very likely the oldest rider on the track at almost 56yrs of age and still looking for the secret to speed. With a PB of 24.32 for 10miles in the distant past he even recorded 23.23 behind Pete Varian in a 2 up ten back in 1998. What he will need is a good team to drag him round the track for an hour. During the training tour of the tracks Graham recorded 19.19. Will the old campaigner rise to the challenge for Children In Need ? Seen here in September recording 27.57 on sporting K26. For some reason he has been christened the Lord of the Dark Side - must be the new carbon frame!.
Phlip Todd Previously known as Little Todge, Phil has suddenly grown to be over 6ft tall so Little Todge just doesn't fit anymore. With this increase in height his power has increased and his times have fallen. Young Philip has regularly recorded 26 minute tens this season on the sporting K26. With the confidence of youth we expect Phil to take to the Calshot boards and once he has gained confidence his youthful speed should come through and he will pull the G-men along. First time up on the boards at Manchester he put in a very creditable 17.71 flying lap. Phil is on Loan from Birmingham CC for the Children In Need 24hr. (Thank you B'ham CC)
Lee Burnell Lee can be reliad upon to deliver. His day job is for delivery of the post, having worked in the cycle trade in the past. Lee is also at home on the ski slopes as an accomplished Snow boarder. As a middle marker Time Trialist, Lee is seen here putting in another 26 minute ride in during the Team Midland Last Chance ten on the not so flat K26.
Alex Whale Alex has a habit of claiming to be unfit then riding away on the hills! There are no hills on the track Alex! Alex is potentialy the fastest rider on the track (if he could ride his race-bred Ducati) Thankfully the Ducati will be left at home for Children In need. One thing is sure Alex will step up to the plate and ride his heart out for the Children in Need. With Graham keeping him in check the fast finishing Alex will be a forceful member of The TM G-men. Alex recordered 24.07 for 2 laps of Calshot and 18.07 flying lap at Manchester.
;
Mark Farndon Mark is new to Team Midland having previously ridden with Mid-Shropshire Wheelers. Mark is a Manchester accredited Track Coach. He is also qualified to drive a Derny Pace Bike !!! It’s a shame that we can't use the derny on the Calshot Boards. Despite his claims to be totally unfit the TM G-men could find themselves stretched when the big man gets into his stride. Did 18.57 for the lap on Manchester.
Alistair Brown
Richard Todd He's not really supposed to be riding the event, but he'll have his kit there in case he's needed. His mission at Calshot is to be track manager, timekeeper, recorder, admin, web updater and sleep deprivation victim. A regular competitor in the TMR series has been known to give Olav a run for his money, and finished 3rd overall in the Vets League this year. Being handicapped with more screws in his back than B&Q expect to see him chatting up the Paralympic team to see whether he'll be too old for the 2012 squad. If he does ride at Calshot, he'll take away Graham's claim of being the oldest rider by about 2 months. Another loanee from Birmingham CC.

Team 5

HVMS South
Phil Glasgow Phil and his team may be new to Track riding but they come from a background of Off-road Mountain bike racing. Having completed the induction programe at Calshot they have taken to the boards very well. It is expected that Phil and the boys will push the TM G-men hard over the 24hours.

Phil got the MTB bug back in '89 and the road thing happened along with a family of his own late in 2005. In the early days Phil raced xc, cyclo cross and Uphill!, then the enduro thing happened with Red Bull 24 (Now called Mayhem) and Clic24 as a solo. More recently club 10's with New Forest CC on the road as well as this years Dragon Ride, Hampshire Hilly 100 have featured. Having great fun now on the boards having first tried on PE Calshot at school over 22 years ago! 11.31s Calshot flying lap.
Andy Betteridge Another New Forest CC member, Andy has a great sporting pedigree .. just not in the velodrome! Spending too many years attached to various pro football clubs and ruining most of his joints along the way, Andy came to cycling in 2007 (previous experience was on stabilisers in the back garden!) and wished he’d done it years ago. With a few sportives and club 10’s safely in the bag he’ll be making sure that team leader Phil pushes the pace along. He only has 2 concerns … will Pudsey get dizzy (this has been bothering him) and will the bar be open when we finish (provided we can still walk) – Graham is buying isn’t he?
Jon Mumby From a tomahawk to a BMX early on and stayed on it till outside forces (parents) decided that early morning off roading (stacking it on the frosty roads while cornering on paper round) warranted the move up to a MTN bike, not as agile as the former steed as it was sized up road bike style by the dealer, that didn't stop Jon however riding the 20 plus miles home with it that day (aged 11, wow gears!). He now has a 5 bike habit and have ridden a few 24hr MTN bike events (CLIC) and gets out as often as possible with the likely lads who got me involved with the Pudsey ride! 11.17s Calshot flying lap.
Matt Sutton A 3rd New Forest cyclist, Matt has not really had much of a cycling career apart from the beginners and group riding course at Calshot. Recently diversified to cycling after a few years of football and some running! 12 seconds for a Calshot flying lap at the first attempt .. it’ll be faster still by now!
Richard O'Shea Richard O’Shea is a 38 year old family man with 2 beautiful young daughters. His core riding is MTB and he takes regular trips to the French Alps for gravity assisted fun. He moved over to the ‘lycra side’ in about 2002 to ‘get fit’!! Since then he has ridden at Barnsfield events, completed the British Cyclosportive (Tour Stage 1) and Highclere Castle 100. He started track riding 3 weeks ago for a laugh when some friends (Andy Betteridge and Phil Glasgow) mentioned it at a party….. and then suddenly he was in this event!! Still feels most comfortable when both his wheels are off the ground!! His wife says that he already has too many bikes already…. But he disagrees!!!! 11.31s Calshot flying lap.
Chris Clark Chris started Mountain Biking in 1990 and even competed against a young Roger Hammond in a minor cyclo cross race that year. Over the next few years he was involved in Off Road XC before realising that riding for fun was far better. Recent years has involved Clic 24 hour endro, London to Paris, London to Brighton (far too many people), Hampshire Hilly 100 and the Marlow 100. Looking forward to including the TEAM MIDLAND 24 hr trackathon on his next Cycling Bio summary!
Ian Hatch Ian is from Totton, 20 minutes from the Calshot track and has been a member of Southampton based Sotonia CC for the last 23 years since joining as a junior aged 17. He has been a regular at Calshot for the last 5 years (should have done it years ago) and openly admits to loving it even when it feels like sub zero in the middle of winter. Though not racing as much as years gone by, he still enjoys the preparation and the nerves of a bike challenge. Ian hopes to bring some track experience to the team and hopes the legs hold-out. (please)

Team 6

Chippenham Wheelers
Andy Cook Capitano and head honcho. Andy (Sir AC) Cook. Annoyingly fast and full of stamina. Has the rather unpleasant habit of being able to empty both nostrils 1 by 1 without letting go of the handlebars. A born leader and destined for sainthood in the next life. Ridden with more teams than most people have had hot dinners. Susceptible to the ‘Red Mist’ syndrome where every other rider is competition to be nailed!
Gordon Scott Gordon (Flash) Scott. Joe average by any other name - excels at winding people up and seeing the funny side of life. Like good wine he improves with age and gets sloshed regularly. Rides various bikes at various times in various events and often seen around the lanes of Dorset talking to himself.
Rob Richardson Rob (Can you hear me?) Richardson. The comedian in the bunch, if you want to get the party started he’s your man, if you want to clear the top deck on the bus he’s still your man, deceptively rapid on a bike and even quicker on the one liners. Always full of enthusiasm and encouragement for others. You just want to cringe when you hear him shout your name.
Mike Andrews Mike Andrews Sisters. Quiet and thoughtful, a good team man with bags of experience. Always willing to help and useful with the hammer, tongs and welding kit. 1 steady dude on a bike be it TT, track or tandem. Very adept at handing out drinks bottles.
Gary Walker Gary (Fixed) Walker. A recent return to the Wheelers, this guy racks up the miles on fixed wheel but never looks out of breath. Improves with every event and will no doubt shine on the boards. Gets on with the job in hand with relentless energy.
Andy Gough Andy (New Boy) Gough. The Wheelers new club secretary, described as a ‘Steady Eddie’ and rides a fluorescent green Kona cross bike on the chain gang! Likened to ‘Jim Hacker, Yes Prime Minister’, an admin guru press type bod. Will hopefully detail the event and have press releases in the club newsletter immediately after the event.
Jacqui Cook Jacquie (That’s nice) Cook. Miss Smooth on a bike, liquid engineering in lycra. Along with her ol’man has previously held national records on the tandem and rides 12 hour TTs herself. Makes a mean sponge cake.
John Else A Gentleman and scholar, more experience than the rest of the team put together. Passed on his smooth and effortless riding skills to his daughter (Mrs Cook).

World Gold Team Sprint May 2006
Simon Richardson What else can we say 2 gold and a Silver in Beijing. This was a hard journey that finished on the top step in the Olympic Stadium in Beijing. In Simon's own words - "I was on a training ride just going up a dual carriageway when a car hit me from behind at 60mph which broke my back and left me with nerve damage down the left hand side of my body. Consequently, I pedal with one leg. I started back on the bike in January 2006 with Steve Bonnici at Newport Track. I have proceeded from there to be coached full time by Courtney Rowe and with his help I made it on to the British Team as a guest ride and then got chosen to go to Beijing. There I managed 2 gold medals on the track and a silver in the TT and helped my team mate Darren Kenny to get gold in the Road Race."
