TM A team |
Olav Martin-Giles |
This year I have been mostly eatin SPROUTS in preparation for the 24 hour. The team don't seem best pleased. But they seem to forget that 3 hours before last years attempt I was tucking into Chicken Rogan Josh, pilau rice, and a naan bread. And most of them survived me on the front. I have been practicing my sleep depravation with working a peculiar shift pattern That throws your bodyclock into a spiral so that your head feels time is going backwards but in fact your body is ageing three times faster. I'm actually 15 but look 45. [Ed: some would say 55, but I couldn't pass comment.] I was looking into fitting an engine into my disc wheel but the smell of two stroke oil kept giving the game away and someone pointed out that the 24 hour race for that type of contraption was in June and at a race track in France. |
|
Andy Davis |
Andy comes from a Cycling heritage family. Father Colin and Uncle reg were Top flight Midland road-men in their day. Andy and brother Steve have followed in their wheel tracks. With bags of road racing and time trialing experience he is the natural choice to lead the Team Midland A team. Having had a hit and miss year due to work commitments but as C I N is getting closer Steve and Andy are piling in the miles on the road and on the track. So this year with Andy calling the shots the TM A team will pile in the miles. |
|
Duncan McNutt |
As a kid I did competitive swimming, and used to have the Nick Name of Darth Vader. This year I am going to need to remember those days so I can harness THE FORCE to stop my backside and legs getting extremely sore during all the ridding on track. My preparation for this is just cycle as normal and turn up. Not too good for getting used to bike position! I am bringing a face mask this year too after Olav's jet propulsion last year. |
|
Colin Trippas |
Colin the serious competitor is so serious he forgot to slow down for an island, went backside over elbow and ended up in Warwick Hospital. By trade he sells tyres to give a serious grip on the road. (as seen on Midlands TV). He is an ace in a Kart as well as on his bike. Not a man to shy away from a challenge but a stickler for detail he can't understand why a 10 mile course may not be ten miles. The course measurer was drunk Colin apparently is not an acceptable excuse! Joking apart Colin will be a very useful asset to the TM A Team - it's just a pity he can't bring the Kart on to the track. |
|
Roland Smythe |
And I thought I was quite a good cyclist until I took on L’Etape du Tour in 2008. In the time that it took me to get to the top of the Hautacam, the pro’s could have ridden the whole route and got back to the start! So that’s when I thought of time trialling – sounds easy so what could be difficult about it? No, don’t try to tell me – I’ve found that one out myself. Still, riding around a velodrome – on a fixed-wheel bike with no brakes and gears – seems an eminently good idea to me! And if I can stay in front of Olav, all the better |
|
David Steele |
Dave comes from the world of Triathlon. He competes under Coventry Tri Colours and has been involved with TM Racing for several years. Hugely powerful and very fast. He took to the high banking of Newport like a Duck to Water (it's probably the swimming that helps). So when the going gets tough the pure bike riders will put Dave on the front and just hang on! |
|
Andy Waters-Peach |
Peachy has ridden TM events from day one. His favourite form of Transport has been the Tandem with Celeste in the power seat (the back one being The power behind the Throne you might say). Together they claimed the 1st ever Team Midland Racing open event victory by winning a tandem event in the Southern area. In recent years the Peach has taken the Peachy Power to the water in Triathlon events but has maintained his cycling style. The question is how will he get on without Celeste whipping him from behind ? Peach the Powerful will undoubtedly triumph over the odds and contribute strongly the TM A team (if the tide rises he can swim round). Peachy produced the event Banners so he has contributed already. Picture shows the Peach on the front, clearing the air for Cee. |
|
Gary Crump |
Crumpy by name. As you can see by the picture he is a black belt in Martial Arts and is seen here demonstrating the Gary Crump mortal combat routine. (he does this ritualistic war-like dance before every event and it really worries the time keepers). Gary has ridden with us for many years and is noted for many things. Time keeping is one of them - in fact his time keeping is a TM legend. When events start at 7pm Greenwich mean time. That's 6.30 Crumpy time! All in all a reliable rider (once he gets there). Power without fuss and a distinctive style. But will probably finish the hour with the team. He might not start with the team but you can't have everything right. (If you are reading this Garry I'm only joking, If you're not then ........) |
|
Rob Ellis (Guest) |
Having been with Agiskoviner.co.uk since 2007 while nursing a knee injury, all has been a bit quiet on the competition front. Things have been looking up since the last Pudsey Challenge with major improvements on the road & track while training though so it’ll be full on in 2010 & Rob will be looking to improve his 6th place in the Rudy Project time trial series & 16th place in the Duo Normand. When not racing, you can often find Rob marshalling or helping out at events (especially the cake or beer tent!). With Paris-Roubaix, the National Track Masters & the Duo as main objectives for 2010 along with PB’s in 10 & 25 mile TTs there will not be much time for cake or beer next year!! Riding here at Calshot helps bring Pudsey out to the public & raise awareness of the causes the money raised over our 24 hours will go towards (along with the nation)…come on Pudsey! |

Team 2 |
Birmingham CC |
Richard Todd |
As well as pedalling, Lord Todj's mission at Calshot is also to be track manager, timekeeper, recorder, admin, website manager and sleep deprivation victim. A regular competitor in the Team Midland series (which he somehow won this year), he's also their web-master and looks after this very site that you're looking at. Has trained specifically for this event by watching DVD's of Eastern European female tennis players, all apparently with names ending in "-ova" (But none with a first name of "Leg"). He expects to be part of the team at the London 2012 Olympics - that's the team of volunteer stewards in the velodrome. |
|
Philip Todd |
Previously known as Little Todge, Phil is now a 16 year-old, 6'2" cycling stick insect, so the name just doesn't fit anymore. With this increase in height his power has increased and his times have improved. Rode 140 miles coast-to-coast in two days on mountain bikes this summer with his dad and Nick S. Enjoyed the Calshot boards last year and has whipped his dad's ass this year in flying laps at Newport. Is looking forward to continuing the whipping at Calshot. Rather annoyingly, his main sport is tennis, so the only other cycling he usually does is to ride to tennis on his BMX, then turns up at Newport on his track bike and gives everyone a kicking. |
|
Nick Selibas |
Used to be sponsored by Pukka Pies, but the funding had to be withdrawn when he ate their whole stock and the firm teetered on the brink of administration. Despite his bulk and his Santa Claus white beard, he is one of the fastest sprinters around so be very worried if the elbows stick out - especially if he's having a bout of RMS (Red Mist Syndrome). At the recent LVRC 2009 Track Champs he took Bronze in the Sprint, and missed out on a medal in the Time Trial by about the width of a rim. |
|
Andrew Lloydlangston |
It's good to know that the young minds of today that will shape the future of the UK tomorrow are in Andy's safe hands. As he so eloquently articulates on his CV "Yusterdaay ah koodnt spell Teechar - today I are wun". A talented artist he's known in the club by the abbreviation of Pic (short for Picasso). [Ed: does that make him a pic artist?.] Officially listed as a Special Needs teacher, it's not clear whether it's the kids or the teacher that has the Special Needs. Has a strange physique, such that he was able to break his ankle early in 2009, without actually falling off. |
|
Mark Barfield |
Ex-Royal Navy, Mark has progressed through sales of condoms to being a big cheese with the British Triathlon Association. Unusually for a member of the BCC, Mark can actually spell and has written a book on training for triathlons. For reasons lost in the mists of time he's known by the nickname of Baywatch. Piccy shows him on some horrendous cobbled climb in Flanders. |
|
Dave Smith |
Known as a larger than life character, he's actually larger in the flesh than a fully laden Eddie Stobart truck. The team will need to control their riding to ensure that Dave and Nick are not on the same bend at the same time else they could jointy create enough centrifugal gravity to make the Large Hadron Collider redundant and put most of Hampshire into a black hole. An ardent Birmingham City fan, Dave now lives in deepest Essex where he's on missionary work to bring proper football to the ancestral homeland of the Ford Capri. Picture was lifted from Dave's famed centrefold spread in the top-shelf magazine "Bridges & Parapets Monthly". |
|
Trevor Moore |
Probably the smoothest pedaller in the Midlands, Trev is a great wheel to follow. Spends his days with a small torch crawling around inside air-con ducting. Has his wallet systematically emptied at regular intervals as he tries to keep all four of his family in bikes and equipment. On loan from Royal Sutton CC. |
|
David Hooper |
2nd Cat roadie lives in Southampton and works for British Triathlon. Ironman athlete in the past and before that in the army for quite a few years. Married with two kids, he's a stand up kind of chap that cant drink but persists in trying!!! Works for Baywatch, so you've got to have a lot of sympathy for the lad. |

Team 3 |
Chippenham Wheelers |
Andy Cook (El Presedenti) |
Team Capon and all round good egg. What he doesn't know about cycling ain't worth knowing. Led "The Boys from 'Nam'" at last year's Trackathon with distinction and also provided the gazebo. Can be frequently seen eating everyone's leftovers and quite partial to stuffed olives. Andy rides just about every type of cycle sport and usually full on, the phrase 'steady ride' holds no meaning to him, a rider on the road is someone to pass, a hill is a momentary reduction in speed which can be compensated for on the other side, the wind is there to cool him, not hinder him. Ride on and on and on. |
|
Gordon Scott |
Centre fold pin up for Lady Magazine and Saga. Takes incredible quantities of cod liver oil and Vaseline to keep moving. He rides his bike every day and will soon be taking the stabilisers off. Retired to Dorset but still employed although word is out and the realisation that he is incompetent is dawning on his employer. Enjoys all forms of cycling but reckons the best bit is just riding with your mates around this glorious countryside and shooting the breeze after with a beer. Takes the p**s a lot. |
|
Mike Andrews |
Rock Steady. This guy can pick a pace and hold it until the cows come home. One of the smoothest riders on the planet and a joy to ride with. Mike just sits there and turns the pedals with no sign of effort whilst the miles fall away. Doesn't compete much these days but on club runs he is the chap to ride with. He's pretty good at fixing stuff and making things and decorating too. |
|
Andy Gough |
Provides much needed stability to the club with a mature outlook and an eye for detail. His ride at last year's 24-hour surprised many of his team although we haven't seen much of him on the road since. Wears natty ties and cufflinks although some of the shirts look as though they have been rescued from Help the Aged. He hopes to fulfil some long distance cycling ambitions but due to being a member of the Flat Earth Society he thinks Blandford Forum is the edge of the known universe and Chippenham nestles on the back of a tortoise! |
|
Chris Mingo |
Apparently he is 'A BMX dude from Andover'. Strikes me as a long way from there to Calshot to ride a BMX but what do I know? Rides the boards a fair bit according to the telegrams that have been received and is keen to raise money for this very worthy cause. Hope he enjoys himself with the 'Boyz from 'Nam! |
|
Tavis Hamilton |
Started mountain biking (failed already as he rides the darkside) around the South Downs. Moved to Bath 3 years ago and has become hooked on the righteous path (road, track etc) after the desire to improve fitness (and street cred) took over. He is keen to take on the challenge of the Trackathon to raise funds for Children in Need. |
|
Tony Solon |
Since leaving the circus Tony has continued to insist on the suitability of riding a 10cm bike in events varying from cross-country mountain biking through to road time trails and track biking. Some would argue that a more up to date approach to bike fitting should be employed but Tony won’t hear of it and continues to persevere with his circus heritage! Hypothetically speaking, had Tony moved onto cycling bikes with a slight chance of being the right size he would probably have competed in events such as: the revered 8day TransAlp MTB race - accused of being the toughest XC race on the menu; the infamous 100 hour Raid de Pyrenees challenge; the highly reputable and feared Three Peaks Cyclo Cross; Keith Bontrager’s 24 hour solo MTB enduro - reserved solely for the deranged; the insane Tough Guy torture event - not on a bike but worth mentioning you understand! Now as a once off occurrence, and only as it’s for such a worthy cause, the circus cycle champ has been coerced into leaving his mini-machine at home to partake in an excellent enduro event in aid of children in need. |
|
Andy Haas |
I've known Andy for many years and can vouch for his integrity (unlike the rest of the 'Nam team!) and infectious enthusiasm for life, whatever he does it is with a smile on his face. I was with him on his first venture on to the boards at Calshot and the phrase 'duck to water' sprang to mind. In the past he has ridden all manner of cycles from TT to Tri's and will no doubt blend in well with The 'Nam. Lives in a funny little Dorset village where he is restoring some old car with the aid of lots of favours from his mates, when not spannering or riding he messes about with surf boards, boats and other floating things so it's a good job he lives where he does. |

Dark Lord's RabbleBank |
Graham Hewson |
Why was he named the Named the Dark Lord? Because he used his dark arts to tempt us into 24hrs of Suffering. He Inspired the Rhino Head on Team Midland kit ! It signifies his refusal to quit. The bugger just does not know how to do it! He has another idea, uses his dark powers of persuasion and we all follow like sheep....BAAAAAA. He is seen here demonstrating how crap a rider he is 28.38 for a ten he is going to need some looking after on the track to hit the targets set. Our revenge will be sweet !! But the Dark lords Team contains 2 knights of the Dark realm Sir Arthur and Sir Keith to drive the team onward. The the 3 Young Squires Ryan, Josh and Luke to add youthful zeal to the evil band. And in case the power of the Knights and the Squires not enough the Wizard of the bunch Coach Merlin Mark Fardon will weave his BC magic to drive the team on. |
|
Ryan Weston |
Have been Mountain Biking for the past 2 years and entered my first race this year - which I won. Been riding on the track at Calshot for the past year but have recently ridden at Newport Velodrome as well. Looking to get a road or track bike very soon so you had all better watch out! Ryan has been borrowed from the Poole Wheelers. |
|
Luke Selibas |
Luke is now 13yrs old and started cycling when he was 5 at a session at Wolverhampton Go Ride. He has ridden most disciplines of cycling including track, road, cross, mtb and has been a few times to the DHL track schools, he was Regional Circuit champ a few yrs ago and follows his father in that does not like hills but has a rapid sprint. Is looking foward to Calshot but not sure about the 2am session. Luke has been borrowed from the Birmingham CC. |
|
Arthur Kelly |
Sir Arthur is the Dark Lord's no 2 (or should I say First Knight) no 2 being something completely different! Sir Arthur has ridden Team Midland events for numerous years and can be relied upon to keep going - despite going head-long into the bog in the New Forest a few seasons back. A very competent timetrial rider Arthur is also very comfortable on the track and will prove to be the driving force in the Dark Lord's team keeping the pace even and waving the big stick to keep the guys in line (Being from the Emerald Isle we can’t understand a word he shouts). Arthur‘s place in the team is that of back-up Leader. The job being to keep the Old Buggar moving. And tow him round when the legs fail. A job he will fulfil to perfection. |
|
Mark Farndon |
|
|
Keith Burdett |
Sir Keith the White Knight of The Dark Realm. Sir Keith hails form the strange wild tribe of the Coventry Tri Club - a group of weird all terrain sub aqua beings. Rumour has it thatthey run in shorts, swim in lakes and during periods of sanity they ride bikes. Sir Keith joined with other members of this strange clan to ride the TM Series time trials. Being slightly insane is an asset when racing with Team Midland Racing so he fits in really well. His performance's have not gone unnoticed and he has been considered for one of the 2009 New Riders of the Year awards. While the high bankings are somewhat different from the Triathlon Waters and running track the Dark Lord expects Sir Keith to be a great asset to the team and help tow the old buggar round to push the mileage higher. |
|
Josh Stewart |
|
|
Phil Quinn (Calshot Staff) |
AKA The Boss. Elite canoeist in a previous life, whose passion for competition still burns brightly. Second is nowhere, he’s inconsolable if the training individual pursuit doesn’t go to plan! |
|
Malc Holmes (Calshot Staff) |
Level 3 coach who demands discipline and control from everyone (but himself). Sees himself as a “rouleur” - as long as the pace doesn’t go above 20mph. Might struggle on the “bendy” bits at Calshot. |
|
Lotty Kirwan (Calshot Staff) |
During a long and illustrious cycling career she’s tried most things and is still trying to find something that she likes. As a sign of her commitment to track cycling she recently sold her bike! Throws down the gauntlet to any male rider daft enough to pick it up. |
|
Ben Walmsley (Calshot Staff) |
A regular cycling commuter, Ben is a very recent convert to all things lycra (much to his partner’s amusement). Pencil-slim, he is one of those uber-annoying types who’s only got one speed going up hills…bloody quick! |
|
Rose Gibson (Calshot Staff) |
“English” Rose has a background in adventure racing and rowing, so she should know all about suffering for the cause. A strong, silent type, we’re expecting her to carry the fight (and the team) |
|
Ian Smith (Calshot Staff) |
“Smithy” to his friends (and enemies) had a break of 15 years between track rides, so the marathon will be his 3rd ride since 1994. He’s looking forward to it, but then he’s also looking forward to his first Iron Man triathlon next May. We applaud your naivety! |

Team 5 |
New Forest CC |
Phil Glasgow |
The wheels of time keep rolling and since last year the road racing and sportive performances have measurably improved! Hoping to put some big miles on the Pudsey clock, Phil G is revved and ready to ride! |
|
Andy Betteridge |
Andy has now officially got the cycling bug .. 1 year on from the Pudsey 'affair' last year and Track and Road Racing dictate the diary. Back for more sleep deprivation (oh how we've missed it) and a breakfast treat in the greasy spoon (that's good fuel you know, honestly!) All he wants is 'Sat Nav' Sutton to find his way round the track without getting lost (it's round mate, just follow the bloke in front .. and don't think, that's dangerous) |
|
Matt Sutton |
I’ve enjoyed a busy first cycling year where I’ve done some road racing, time trialling and looking forward to taking part in the New Forest 100 mile ride in October. I’m yet to record a time trial time I’m proud of mainly due to getting lost, I always end up having a nice ride though! Also this year I have progressed to running half marathon distances and competed in my first triathlon in September. Looking forward to getting back on the track after the success of last year’s event and to catching up with some familiar faces. |
|
Jon Mumby |
Jon (I need to find the winning instnct) Mumby has the cycling bug and knows no limits when it comes to pre-, mid- and post-ride cake eating! Has enjoyed the baptism that is his 1st season of circuit racing in Pompy and is looking forward to the track this winter even the 24hrs hours that is PUDSEY! |
|
Neil Gordon |
The teams Rouleur - previous tens and road rides have have been beaten into submission and 'Nelly' is a valuable addition to the team for 2009. A real team player he'll be knocking a man size hole in the wind for Phil G and the guys to follow. |
|
Ian Hatch |
I can't believe it's been almost a year from the last 24Hr event. Major upgrade in equipment this year, self inflating mattress, sleeping on that floor last year was worst than the pain of cycling all those weird hours. So things are looking rosie for this year, just hope the fitness improves. |
|
Paul Hudson |
In my younger (and faster) days I've road raced, time trialled, and mountain biked, riding for a variety of clubs around the south of england. Stopped riding for several years but got back in the saddle again a few years ago - I'd forgotten just how much enjoyment you can have flogging yourself on 2 wheels. Looking forward to helping raise money for Pudsey, so just one last thing to say - bring it on !!! |

Team 6 |
Poole Wheelers |
Craig Weston |
Have been riding MTB for the past 15 years, regularly riding around 6-7,000 miles per annum. I have entered quite a few MTB races and even won the last 2!. Only just bought my first road bike but I have been a regular at Calshot for the past 3 years. |
|
Adam Wykes |
Former British track and team time trial squad member. Having said that my last national medal was in 1989 when I was riding for the Zenith and we came 3rd in the National Team pursuit, beaten by Boardman and Manchester wheelers. So I am a bit of has been.[Ed: Photo shows Adam in his party outfit being held up on his bike by Hagrid.] |
|
Johnathan Snelgrove |
Johnathan is a 6'3" powerhouse who is coming back for a second time. Whether on the road, track or mountain bike he will be there until the bitter end. At Calshot he will help keep the pace near the max. |
|
Alan Holbert |
23 year-old a software engineer. As well a being a member of Poole wheelers also a member of Poole Athletic Club and North Dorset Tri Club. Primarily a triathlete but would would consider cycling to be possibly his strongest discipline. Has suffered this year with lower back problems - possibly disc related. Got back on the bike about a month ago. Keen on long distance charity rides and for charity has done the Dorset 66 miler for BHF and the 100 miler for Macmillan. |
|
Max Baldock |
Max started riding and joined Poole Wheelers about seven years ago, got the TT bug instantly and has been competing ever since riding in open and national events. PB's 10 - 19.46; 25 - 51.36; 50 - 1.47.58 Max has won about 12 open events and had about 60 top 10 finishes, Came 57th in the National 10 this year. |
|
Graham Hurst |
Well.....I have now been riding and racing for more years than I care to remember. I have tried most forms of the sport - road racing (was a 2nd cat); cyclo –cross fine if you don’t mind cleaning bikes; grass track which was great fun but now there is none locally; and hard track riding in the motor paced finals at Leicester in 1985, 1986 and 1987. Now all my time seems to be spent on coaching courses, running club events at Calshot, and running around after my daughter - but its all good fun. Attached is a picture of myself taken a few years ago. The gear being used is a 92 X 13 as we found the 92 x 12 was too big !!! (will it be OK to bring this bike for the 24hr ride??) (Only joking) |
|
David Young |
I'm 23 and work as a physiotherapist. I got into cycling last year and I've tried my hand at road, track and off roading. I joined the poole wheelers at the beginning of last season and really enjoy the long training rides as well as time trials; the shorter the better in my opinion so the pain is over and done with quickly. My 10 mile PB on the road is 23.31. |
|
John Vinson |
I have been into cycling ever since I was ten, but I didn’t start racing till I was about 15, where I did a fair few mountain bike races with Gorrick and I also did a few spam biking events. I joined Poole Wheelers around two years ago, that’s when I started doing 10 mile and 25 mile time trials, and I have been improving my times since then, my fastest 10m is 23.39 and my fastest 25m is 1.07.17. I have been doing the Poole Wheelers track sessions for the last two years and have really got into them! And really enjoy being on the track. I was also pleased when I got a chance to go up to Newport to train on there. |
|
Gordon Skillen |
My name is Gordon Skillen, I'm 36 years old and have been racing for six years (sounds like an AA meeting so far). I made my first foray onto the boards in 2005 and have done every winter league since - my results fairly meagre, with one win and a handful of 2nds and 3rds. I have a cycling-based blog - Gordo's World of Zoom (http://zoom-gordo.blogspot.com/) and do race reports for the Wessex League on their blog (http://wessexvelo.wordpress.com/). Outside of racing, I live in Wimborne, am married to Amani (tea/cake provider at the Moreton Kermis series) have one dog, two cats and ten chickens. |

|
|
Team 7 |
Magnus Maximus & All Stars |
Simon Richardson |
What else can we say 2 gold and a Silver in Beijing. This was a hard journey that finished on the top step in the Olympic Stadium in Beijing. In Simon's own words - "I was on a training ride just going up a dual carriageway when a car hit me from behind at 60mph which broke my back and left me with nerve damage down the left hand side of my body. Consequently, I pedal with one leg. I started back on the bike in January 2006 with Steve Bonnici at Newport Track. I have proceeded from there to be coached full time by Courtney Rowe and with his help I made it on to the British Team as a guest ride and then got chosen to go to Beijing. There I managed 2 gold medals on the track and a silver in the TT and helped my team mate Darren Kenny to get gold in the Road Race." |
|
Russell Hampton |
We would like to welcome Russell to the 2nd TM Pudsey 24hr. As an Ex Great Britain Academy, 100% Me and GB Squad Rider Russell has been sent along by Magnus Backstead to tow Simon Richardson round for an hour. Apparently Russell is cheaper to run than your average Durney but just as effective. In the recent round of the Track world Cup he came away with Gold in the Scratch Race. Also during 2009 as the Magnus Maximus Team progress they have been involved riding Kermesse's in Belguim and some national tours. Russell came back to the UK briefly to claim 5th place in the national Time Trial Champs. So a message to the rest of the riders in the Magnus All Stars Team - hang On you are in for a rough ride. According to Simon Richardson the plan is to put Russell on the front and pray we stay with him! (Sounds like an evil plan worthy of the dark one). |
|
Euan Adams |
Riding and racing since before he could walk (almost!) Euan has been riding road, mountain bike, cyclo cross, track and even triathlon races in the last few years. Although he has never ridden round Calshot, his experience in 24hour mountain bike races means he knows what it takes to stay strong all the way through. |
|
Ross Adams |
Like Euan, has been racing for almost 20 years already, including representing GB in the World Mountain Bike Marathon Championships and World Student Games. After riding last year, is looking forward to trying average 25mph after 4hours sleep! |
|
Tim Wallis |
Currently studying medicine at Southampton University, Tim raced at the highest level as a junior, representing GB at many races. A few nasty crashes have meant he has not raced so much in the last few years, but he is still super strong and having ridden this event last year, knows what it will feel like to get up and ride fast at 4am. |
|
Paul Stewart |
Either insane or supremely confident, Paul has signed up to ride for two teams - the Magnus All-Stars and the Bournemouth Arrow. |
|
Phil Glasgow |
Another certifiable lunatic who has also signed on the ride for two teams - this one and the New Forest CC. Off the bike Phil is easy to spot - he's the one walking round with the gallon jar of Sudocreme. |
|
Daniel Patten |
Dan started cycling in 2006. What a meteoric rise. In 2008 riding for the PCA Ciclos Team he was named the King of Hog Hill after riding everyone off his wheel and then lapping the field! At the end of 2008 while being Coached by Adrian Timmis he was introduced to Big Maggi and Martin Mc Crossman and eventually was offered a place in the New Cyclesport.se Magnus Maxiumus Coffee.com team. What a rise through the ranks. His objective for 2009 was to ride as a domestique in the Magnus Pro Team! He seems to have just the right temperament to ride in the Children In Need Event. If he wants to sit on the front and tow riders round we have 8 teams who would like his services. You can see here Dan is taking the Pudsey 24hr seriously. He is training in cold weather gear, clearly he has heard about the Calshot heating system obviously. As I said at the beginning - a meteoric Cycling career so far. Rubbed shoulders with the ports best; served his apprenticeship in Belgium Kermises with a Swedish registered ProTeam. And to cap it all he will finish the year pretending to be Pudsey Bear in a Team Midland organised event!!!!! How many top Continental Pro Riders can claim that then???? Great to have you with us Dan. |

Team 8 |
Bournemouth Arrow |
David Gilham |
Last year I wore the official Yellow Jersey and led the Bournemouth Arrows team round Calshot for two hours, this year we are back and doing three hours - we must be mad, particularly certifiable are the members that have 'volunteered' to ride the 3am slot! I used to enjoy spending my summer weekends time trialling, now I seem to spend more time acting as unofficial coach, official chauffeur and financier to our own Pocket Rocket, than I do riding my own bike. However, I have managed to compete in the National Masters Track Championships and the European Masters Track Championships at Manchester (nearly expiring in the process!). I realize that the day is fast approaching when my daughter will be going faster than me, but at the moment I'm still ahead of her - just, which is why I need those 'posh' wheels more than she does! |
|

Last year she was affectionately known as the 'Pedalling Stick Insect'. This year our Team Mascot has grown into 'The Pocket Rocket'. She enjoys nothing more than humiliating the lesser male mortals on the boards at Calshot and she's extremely good at it. Men have been known to shed a tear at the sight of her flying lap times, and that includes her dad (though she hasn't quite beaten him yet)! This year she took part in the Omnium finals in Manchester and the National Track Championships at Newport - where she gave the U16 girls a fright in the Scratch race. She was also a member of the England South team at the UK Schools Games. If she's spotted riding her 'posh' wheels, mum can confirm that she's supposed to be sharing them with dad! Watch our 'Pocket Rocket' go! |

I did it last year, was clearly the slowest rider in the Bournemouth Team but I'm still returning for more, I am completely barmey. Even worse I'm staying overnight to do the 03.00 am slot, although as a qualified Calshot Coach I could be forced to supervise rather than ride!
At 63 I'm clearly in "The older I get, the faster I was" category and really should know better. Am relying on a couple of post 07.00 pm session Kronenburghs getting me through. |

I an found old photo of the last track event I won in the mid 1980's at Poole Park. I have been racing and a member of the Bournemouth Arrow for over 30 years and have been riding Calshot for almost as long. Now I mainly just time trial with six 12hr time trial finishes but not for the last 10 years. Now I work permanent nights so I may be the only one awake for the 3am slot. |
